How to prevent a failed or leaking walk in shower.
Hello Donnie D. here with Donnie D’s Tile & Remodeling LLC in spotswood New Jersey Welcome back!
Today we will discuss what I have learned in the construction industry of 25 years regarding failed or leaking walk in tiled shower in spotswood new jersey.
Make certain the substrate is sound. What this means is that what framing around the shower should be not rotted, not moving and the proper materials used. Usally 2x4 wall studs are sufficent. Once project I came across with 2x3 studs, which in that case I add blocking inbetween the studs for added strength. Next will be the subfloor. If it is concrete make sure if there is any cracks that they are address with a crack prevention membrane. In most cases the subfloor is wood. In this case the proper thickness of the subfloor should be 5/8” plywood tounge and groove, but 3/4” is better minimum. Also that the floor joists are at 16” on center. If they are more like 19” on center or 24” on center you will want to add 1/2” plywood to reduce the deflection in the floor. After the subfloor make sure the joists are not rotted or sagging.
Make certain the plumbing is sound. Meaning all the drain and water supply lines are free. You do not want to go thru all this work and have leaking plumbing. If you have old cast iron or copper drains, I always recommend changing them out to pvc or abs while everything is open.
Make certain the water proofing method choosen is done correctly and flood tested. This is critical, your shower will see more water than your roof. Check out some of my oher blogs or youtube videos for shower water proofing methods.
.Make certain the shower door is sealed, along with all the penetrations that go thru the tile and waterproofing with a proper sealant. Usually silicone.
And that wraps it up! Thanks for hanging out with me!
